PHILIPPOPOLIS

Hristo Arabadjiev

The Philippopolis Chamber Ensemble has been an independant choir since 1987. It is from Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria.
Philippopolis is the city's ancient name. It was founded by Philip of Macedonia in 343 B.C. Encouraged by the growing interest of music lovers in ancient works, the ensemble specialized in cultivating sacred orthodox chants. The choir gave their first concert in Bulgaria and abroad. Some of them were broadcast by radio and television.

In may 1989 they took part in the 8th Festival of Orthodox Church Music in Hajnowka, Poland. In a very short time the choir earned international recognition with concert in Cyprus, at the 2nd International Festival of Orthodox Church Music in Moscow (January 1990), at further concert in Russia (May 1990) and at the 25th International Cantata - Oratorio Festival Vratislavia Cantans in Poland (September 1990).

Philippopolis' first tour in Great Britain included concerts in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Edinburgh, Bath and Eton college. In 1992 the ensemble went to Bergamo (Italy) and participated at the Musica Sacra Festival in Marktoberdorf (Allgäu) and in Osnabrück as well as at the Edinburg Festival.

In 1993 they went on tour in Germany twice, giving more than 30 concerts. Highlights of the tour were the concert at the Gasteig in Munich and at the Liederhalle in Stuttgart.

In 1999, they participated to two french Alan Simon's albums (Excalibur, la légende des celtes) and gave in France some concerts with this productor as in Bercy in 2000.
They participed, too, to the english album (Open the door) of Roger Hodgson (ex-leader of the grup Supertramp).

Their commitment to artistic perfection paired with religious convictions has lead to an astounding artistic level.
The choir is rightfully regarded as word class.
